Three main tasks for an operator
Every operator has them, here are three important ones:
- Monitoring the process
- Dealing with deviations
- Knowing the key cause-and-effect relationships of the production process.
These are discussed in more detail below.
1 – Process control
Production is going well when the product is produced within specifications, on time, and in the right quantity. Or as an operator would say, “It’s going well! But how do you know if things are going well, what do you look for?”
2 – Respond to deviations
When things threaten to go wrong with the process or product, what do you do? This can range from making minor adjustments to a process setting to immediately stopping production and putting all hands on deck!
3 – Know the cause and effect
What quality deviation requires what adjustment? The relationships between the settings an operator uses to control the process and the parameters that determine whether the process and product are good describe the cause-and-effect relationships of the process.
