Securing the expertise of experts

With our clients, we see 3 main outcomes after experiential knowledge is captured and made available:

1. Fewer requests for help
2. New employees trained and ready to work faster
3. Improved performance and reduced cost of failure

1 – Fewer calls for help

  • Employees can now solve most problems on their own.

2 – Faster training and development

  • Train and deploy new employees faster.

3 – Improved performance

Improves process and product control results in better performance and reduced failure costs.

Here ar some real-world examples:

Resolving technical breakdowns

Suppose an operator is standing in front of a machine that stops unexpectedly. Normally, this would mean a direct call to the technical department or a process engineer. With ELICIT Online, however, the (new) operator has immediate access to the initial checks he needs to perform and the adjustments he can make independently. It also indicates when he needs to scale up to the team leader or TD. Thus, based on the recorded experience, the operator can now independently make an initial diagnosis and perform a simple repair or restart without delaying production any longer than necessary and without immediately calling the Team Leader or TD.

Quality control and adjustments

When quality deviations occur on a production line, an operator may have needed help to make the appropriate adjustments to machine settings. Now, with 2 clicks, the operator can see which control steps to take first, and which adjustments can and should be made. This enables the operator to make his own adjustments to process and quality deviations based on recorded experience, resulting in less waste and higher quality.

Adjust raw material mix

If you observe a consistency problem with a product, the cause could be a variation in the raw material mix. Previously, this would require a lot of trial and error and consultation with experts. With ELICIT Online, the operator can now check for himself whether the problem is caused by the raw material mix. The operator then makes the adjustment, tests the result, and restores the desired product consistency without outside help.

By capturing valuable knowledge and making it accessible, you empower operators to proactively address and correct quality deviations, resulting in higher product quality and less reliance on individual experts.

How many questions should you ask?

It turns out that it takes an average of 110 questions to describe an operator workstation in a knowledge file.

We also know from experience that an average of 20 parameters and 72 instructions are needed to describe the core, including process monitoring and control (see figure).

Your experienced expert: an asset, or a bottleneck?

They walk your shop floor: those few senior operators who know the machines inside and out. When something goes wrong, they get the call. Great to have people like that, right? Yes, until they leave, get sick, or retire. And then it turns out your production grinds to a complete halt without them. How do you prevent that?

Significant decrease number of help requests

With our clients, we see the following 3 main results after capturing and making available experiential knowledge with ELICIT Online.

1. Fewer requests for help; employees can now solve most problems on their own.

2. New employees are trained and ready to work faster.

3. Improved performance and reduced failure costs through better process and product control.

The Importance of Performance Support for Manufacturing Companies

What is Performance Support?

Performance Support is a way to help people work faster and more efficiently. It is software that has a clear and easily accessible structure to the right information. Performance Support can help with knowledge transfer to facilitate the learning process. This is especially useful when it comes to specific knowledge for working with systems (machines or equipment) that can be complicated and difficult to explain.
